Peanut Butter & Jelly Collection

Body Edge is collecting jars of peanut butter and jelly to donate to the local food banks.  This project has been orchestrated by the Old Bridge Preservation Society.  We are proud to help a local organization with this very thoughtful project.  As many of you know, we have a large group of homeless along with a tremendous amount of underprivileged children and adults in our South Brunswick area. Please help us, help them, by dropping off peanut butter and/or jelly to the gym by Friday, June 30th at 3pm.

 A note from Paula Micale, your Pilates instructor…

I was born in Bedford, Maine, moved New Jersey at an early age and then to Shallotte, North Carolina in 2011. I am married with two children and two grandchildren.  I became interested in Pilate fitness while an owner/operator of a fitness center in Freehold, NJ. In 2002 I obtained my Personal Pilates Fitness Trainer Certification from the Joseph H. Pilates institute in Waco, Texas, where I learned to teach and understand the techniques of Pilates fitness training.  I introduced Pilates fitness training at my fitness center and taught from 2002 to 2008.  In 2013 after leaving NJ and moving to NC I again became interested in Pilates fitness training. I took a refresher/recertification course in Wilmington, NC.

Since 2013, I have been teaching Pilates at the community center in the Rivers Edge Golf and Plantation where I am a resident.  I have enjoyed teaching Pilates for many years and have seen the benefits in my students as they obtain core strength, flexibility, balance, and general good health.  In my classes the environment is warm and welcoming.  We work hard as a team but share some laughs along the way. I am enthusiastic about helping my students build body awareness and improving their quality of life.  By observing a student’s posture and breathing I can evaluate their progress.  The love of Pilates makes people feel better and move with ease and confidence.

Yes, it’s that time of year again. The weather gets warm, school gets out and people head to the beach!
Just because you’re on vacation does not mean you can skip your workouts. If you are anything like me, vacation means you eat some of the yummy foods you normally avoid and the adult beverages increase. Yes?

Well here is the good news… Body Edge Fitness offers day passes for $12 or week passes for $30.

Are classes more your speed? (You don’t have to think, the instructor tells you what to do in a fun group environment.) Come try Tabata, Yoga, Strength, Core Challenge, Body Fit, Spin, Edge, Zumba or Silver Sneakers for $10 per class.

Personal Training is also available by appointment to focus on your specific needs for $35 per session.

Awesome New Class

Hey gang, we have added an awesome new class to our schedule…Core Challenge!

This 45 minute class is designed to improve core strength, flexibility, stability and balance using a variety of equipment including your own body weight.

Class will be taught by our very own Teri Daly on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9am during the month of June.

Plank Challenge Winners

What an amazing group of athletes we have at Body Edge Fitness! The plank contest was a huge success. Congrats to everyone who participated and improved their time over the month.  But I must say Ray Zetts (81 years old), you are our hero! Ray held the plank on his forearms and toes for 13 minutes and 23 seconds…wow!  Stay tuned for results from our October “Push-ups for Pec” contest to support Breast Cancer Awareness.

Are you sweating this summer???

BANa-ProductBANa was developed by Dr. Benjamin Yoo, who practices in Mt. Pleasant, SC. The product is modeled after a saline IV and is designed to simplify the process of overcoming dehydration, heat exhaustion and cramping – but can also be used to help prevent them!

What is Dehydration?

While there are many different ways for your body to absorb H20, the Kidneys are the most efficient way. The Kidneys actively transport H20 to the rest of your body.

Sodium Fuels Rehydration

Sodium is the key electrolyte used to help the body retain fluids. This is the basis of a Normal Saline IV fluid given in the ER. The only ingredients in a 1 Liter Normal Saline are Salt (NaCl) and Water (H2O) (9,000mg of Salt in 1,000ml of Water). Sodium is the most abundant electrolyte contained in the fluid within the body. When dehydrated, the body sends a signal to the brain, adrenals, and the kidneys. This triggers hormones to be released from the brain and the adrenal gland to let the kidneys know the body needs fluids. During dehydration, through these hormones, sodium is taken from the kidneys through an active transport system. When this occurs, water is passively moved into the body as well. In the kidneys, water cannot be reabsorbed without the active transport of sodium. This is the concept behind IV fluids and BANa.

Meet our new instructor…

Casey FallonWe are very excited that Casey Fallon has joined the Body Edge team.  Casey is now teaching two new classes, 5pm Strength class on Thursday nights and an 8am Spin class on Friday mornings.  She is also subbing wherever we need her.  Our members and guests have reported back with rave reviews!  If you have not tried one of Casey’s classes please do, you are sure to get a great workout and have fun in the process.

Casey is a certified Madd Dog Spinning Instructor and Les Mills Body Pump Instructor.  She is a recent graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey, class of 2016, where she studied English, Biology and Public Health.  She was a member of the Rutgers cheer leading team, and has always incorporated education and fitness into her life.  She plans to attend graduate school to become a Physician Assistant.

New classes are rocking!

June 1st kicked off of two new EXCITING classes at Body Edge.

tabataFirst up is Tabata at 8am.  Tabata is a “High Intensity Interval Training” program featuring 8 rounds of 8 – 20 second sets which equals 32 minutes of work.  Tabata is great quick workout if you want to get in fabulous shape and improve your endurance, strength and speed.  Anyone can take the class regardless of age and fitness level.  All exercise can be modified to fit your specific needs!  Class will be held Mondays and Wednesdays 8-8:45am and taught by Teri Daly.

Next is Zumba 101 at 12 noon! Zumba 101 is a Latin inspired calorie burning dance fitness class with easy to follow moves.  All ages and fitness levels are welcome but designed for beginners and seniors.  A serious dose of low impact energy and crazy fun!  Cheryl will show you the moves and the steps are easy to follow.  Ditch the workout and join the party!!!  Class will be held Mondays and Wednesdays 11:45am – 12:30pm and taught by Cheryl Cullina.
